Crane Rental & Rigging FAQs — Brooklyn, NY

These are the questions Empire Crane & Rigging hears most from New York City homeowners and property managers about crane rental and rigging — pricing, permits, timelines, and how the work actually goes. Short answers here; the linked service and cost pages go deeper. If your question isn't covered, call (347) 620-1227 and ask us directly.

How much does it cost to rent a crane in NYC?

A standard mobile crane with a certified operator typically runs $1,500–$4,000 for a half or full day in NYC, depending on capacity, travel, and permit needs. Knuckle-boom trucks often cost less for lighter picks. Permits, traffic control, and after-hours premiums are quoted as separate line items so you can see exactly what the city, not the crane, is charging you.

What permits does a crane lift need in New York City?

Most street lifts need an NYC DOT permit for the crane placement and any street or sidewalk closure, and the crane itself must be licensed with the DOB with a licensed operator and rigger. Building-side requirements vary by site. We handle the full permit stack as part of the booking and confirm approval before your lift date.

What information do you need to quote my lift?

Four things: what is being lifted and its weight, where it sits now, where it needs to land (height and distance from where a crane can set up), and your target date. Photos of the site help enormously. With those, we spec the machine, check the radius math, and quote a fixed price.

What happens if wind or weather is bad on lift day?

Cranes have strict wind limits that depend on the load's size and shape — a bulky, light load like an HVAC unit catches wind like a sail. If conditions exceed safe limits, we stop and reschedule; there is no pressure and no argument, and rescheduling terms are spelled out in your quote before you book.

Can a crane lift over my house or a neighboring building?

Often yes, with the right machine, radius, and — critically — the right permissions and notifications. Loads never travel over occupied areas or the public way without the permits and protection the city requires. Tell us the layout and we will tell you whether the pick is routine, needs extra steps, or should be done a different way.

Do you provide rigging and a signal person, or just the crane?

Both, by default. Our standard booking includes the crane, certified operator, rigging gear, and a qualified rigger/signal person. If your crew prefers to rig with our team supervising, that works too — we settle roles in the lift plan so nobody improvises on the day.
